Dog Songs by Mary Oliver (2013, Penguin Press; 145 pages) Mary Oliver's Dog Songs is one of the best poetry books published in the last five years. If you are an animal/dog lover, there is nothing in this book that you won't carry with you once you turn the last page. If you are not a dog lover, I would be curious to find out your reaction. The writing, as always in Mary Oliver's poems, is gorgeous. The poems are exquisite. But the feelings they evoke, and the feelings they awake, well, that is beyond the possibility of description. I cried, I laughed. I spent a flight from Alaska to Madrid reading the poems over and over again. Crying when Percy dies. And crying with the emotions that the death of my own dogs already boils in me! Perfection in literature is what I felt reading this book that I purchased in hard copy, and also downloaded in my Kindle. An exerpt: Little Dog's Rhapsody in the Night He puts his cheek against mine and makes small, expressive sounds. And when I’m awake, or awake enough he turns upside down, his four paws in the air and his eyes dark and fervent. “Tell me you love me,” he says. “Tell me again.” Could there be a sweeter arrangement? Over and over he gets to ask. I get to tell. Read it. Go and grab it and devour it right this minute. Find this title in our catalog: Dog Songs Recommended by: Maite
