Storm Front by Jim Butcher (Roc, 2000; 332 pages; Book 1 - The Dresden Files series) For Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, business, to put it mildly, stinks. So when the police bring him in to consult on a grisly double murder committed with black magic, Harry's seeing dollar signs. But where there's black magic, there's a black mage behind it. And now that mage knows Harry's name. The beginning of an enormously entertaining series filled with vampires, werewolves, fairies, knights, demons, trolls, and just about every other kind of mythical creature you can think of. But what sets The Dresden Files apart is Harry's hard-boiled voice, and Butcher's ability to infuse his well-written action sequences with a never-ending supply of dark humor and pathos. Word of warning: once you start this series, you won't be able to quit until you've read all 15 (so far) volumes. It's that good.
